Δυνατός και απρόβλεπτος σαν τον πάτερα του θεό Άρη, όμορφος και τρυφερός σαν τη μητέρα του θεά Αφροδίτη ο Έρωτας..!
Ο Ησίοδος στη «Θεογονία» του περιγράφει τον Έρωτα ως τον ωραιότερο θεό που λυγίζει την ψυχή και λύει το σώμα. Ο Αριστοφάνης θεωρεί ότι το ανθρώπινο σώμα ήταν διπλό και χωρίζοντάς το ο Δίας, ανάγκασε τους ανθρώπους να ψάχνουν το άλλο τους μισό.
